David Garcia, MD, Medical Advisor
Dr. David Garcia received his MD from the University of Alabama and completed his internship, residency and chief residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Garcia joined the faculty at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1999 and is now an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine. He is the co-director of the university’s Anticoagulation Management Service and is the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education in the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Garcia has been an investigator in numerous clinical trials of anticoagulant medications. He is the President of the Anticoagulation Forum, a national interest group focused on the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disease. Dr. Garcia’s primary research interests include the treatment of warfarin-associated coagulopathy and peri-procedural anticoagulation for patients with mechanical heart valves. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has been a member of the editorial board of Thrombosis since 2002.
Adrien Hernandez, M.D., MHS, Medical Advisor
Dr. Hernandez, a cardiologist, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas-Southwestern and completed internal medicine residency at the University of California–San Francisco. After completing a cardiology fellowship at Duke, he joined the faculty specializing in heart failure and cardiac transplantation. He also has an appointment at the Duke Clinical Research Institute where he leads national and international studies in heart failure investigating a wide array of therapeutics, health services, outcomes and quality of care. He has authored publications in Journal of American Medical Association, Circulation, Journal of American College of Cardiology and many other peer-reviewed journals.
Thomas Ortel, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Consultant
Dr. Thomas Ortel received his PhD from the University of Indiana in biochemistry and his MD from the University of Indiana School of Medicine. He completed his residency in medicine and fellowship in hemotology at Duke University School of Medicine. Associate Professor of Medicine, is the medical director of the Anticoagulation Management Service and the Coagulation and Platelet Immunology Laboratory at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Ortel's clinic oversees the care of more than 700 patients, including an expanding number of patients managed in a "virtual" clinic setting from all over the southeastern United States. Dr. Ortel is principal investigator on numerous NIH grants in the field of coagulation and has over 70 peer-reviewed publications in the field. He has been a consultant to ZyCare for over eight years and has been instrumental in developing the CoagCare system.
Eric D. Peterson, MD, MPH, FAHA, FACC, Medical Advisor
Dr. Peterson is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology and the Associate Vice Chair for Quality at Duke University Medical Center. He is also an Associate Director and Director of CV Research at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. He received his MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and an MPH from Harvard University with special emphasis in biostatistics, health economics, and decision analysis. Dr. Peterson is a leader in health quality research, with over 300 peer-reviewed publications in the field. Dr. Peterson is the Principal Investigator for the NIH/AHRQ Duke Centers for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERTs), Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) National Cardiac Surgery Database, Data Coordinating Center for both the American College of Cardiology’s National Cardiac Database (ACC-NCDR) and the American Heart Association’s Get With the Guidelines Data (AHA GWTG). Dr. Peterson participates on multiple national committees including Chair of the AHA Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Interdisciplinary Working Group. He is also a Contributing Editor on the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Jay S. Skyler, MD, MACP, Medical Advisor
Dr. Skyler is currently a Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, & Psychology, in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, & Metabolism, Department of Medicine, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida. He served as Director of that Division from 2000 to 2004. At the University of Miami, he is Associate Director for Academic Programs in the Diabetes Research Institute. He is Chairman of the NIH (NIDDK)-sponsored Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet, an international network conducting clinical trials to prevent type 1 diabetes or interdict the type 1 diabetes disease process. His research interests are in clinical aspects of diabetes, particularly improving the care of type 1 diabetes through meticulous glycemic control, psychosocial and behavioral support, and immune intervention. He is widely acclaimed for developing “algorithms” for patient adjustment of insulin doses. He is a past President of the American Diabetes Association, the International Diabetes Immunotherapy Group, and the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation, and was a Vice-President of the International Diabetes Federation. He served as a member of the Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Subspecialty Examining Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine, as Chairman of the Council of Subspecialty Societies of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and a member of the ACP Board of Regents. He was founding Editor-in-Chief of Diabetes Care, and currently is Scientific Editor of International Diabetes Monitor and Associate Editor of Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics.
